Lithium Iron Phosphate Batteries

LiFePO4 is a type of lithium-ion battery, so that’s not a real comparison. It makes more sense to compare lithium-ion phosphate batteries against more specific lithium-ion chemistries like NMC. Through that lens, LiFePO4 is the stronger choice for off-grid and solar storage. Longer cycle life, better thermal stability, and safer chemistry.

They can last 5,000-8,000+ charge cycles, tolerate deep discharges (80-100% usable capacity), and resist thermal runaway better than NMC lithium-ion. They also hold a flat voltage through most of the discharge, so your system gets consistent power until the battery is nearly empty.

They’re bigger and heavier than NMC at the same capacity, and they cost more upfront than lead-acid batteries do. They may lose a bit of performance in extreme cold, too. Most need a built-in low-temperature charging cutoff to prevent cell damage below freezing.

LFP chemistry is extremely stable. It’s not prone to thermal runaway like other lithium-ion battery types. You have little to worry about when you rely on this technology for home energy storage and mobile electric applications.

A single LiFePO4 cell has a nominal voltage of 3.2V. Solar batteries are built in series configurations: 4 cells for 12.8V (12V systems), 8 cells for 25.6V (24V), and 16 cells for 51.2V (48V).

They charge using a constant-current/constant-voltage (CC-CV) profile and need a charger or charge controller with a LiFePO4-specific setting (usually 14.4-14.6V for a 12V battery). They charge faster than lead-acid batteries since they don't require long absorption and float stages.
