Depends on your pool size and which pump you need. Smaller SunPumps models (39-50 GPM) run on roughly 500-800 watts of panel. The 115 GPM brushless unit needs closer to 1,500-2,000 watts. Brushless models run longer since nothing wears out mechanically. Expect 10+ years with minimal upkeep. You’ll have to replace the brushes on brush-type motors every so often, but they’re super durable otherwise. Either type outlasts most conventional pool pumps.

No sun = no pump. Cloudy days and nighttime mean you won’t get as much circulation. That’s fine for most pools since you mostly need filtration during daylight anyway. You'd need battery storage on top of the panels if your pool genuinely needs 24-hour circulation.

The other drawback is that these pumps are more expensive than their conventional counterparts. Remember, though, they pay for themselves fast. It’s a smart investment.
