Set Up a Reliable System With a Solar Charge Controller You Can Count On!

The controller lives between your solar panels and your battery bank. Its job is to regulate voltage and current to keep your batteries charging safely and efficiently.

This is not a component you can afford to cut corners on, which is why customers turn to The Solar Store. We’ve curated an unparalleled solar charge controller selection from industry-leading brands like Victron, OutBack, Go Power, Zamp Solar, and SLD Tech.

From 10A PWM units for small panels to 80A MPPT models sized for full-home arrays, we’ve made sure there’s a controller for any off-grid or battery-based system here in our collection. You can even count on us for an RV solar charge controller for your van, trailer, or motorhome!

We recommend an MPPT solar charge controller for most applications. It converts excess panel voltage into extra charging current at more than 98% efficiency. It’s the gold standard in solar technology right now.

Our customer service team is always available to answer any questions you may have about picking the perfect solar charge controller, be it a Victron charge controller or one of the budget brands in our lineup. Get in touch today at (541) 388-3637 and take the stress out of piecing together your solar system!

FAQ

It regulates power flow from your panels to your batteries. Panels could overcharge and damage your battery bank without one of these controllers in place. Its primary purpose is limiting voltage and current to safe levels. It drops to float mode once the batteries hit capacity, and it blocks reverse current at night.

Technically yes, but not for long. The batteries will slowly but surely get damaged. The problem is panels push voltage above what a 12V or 24V battery can safely absorb (especially under low load). The one exception is small trickle-charge panels under 5W. These don’t make enough current to be harmful to batteries.

Yes. That’s its main job. It drops to “float mode” at that point and maintains a lower holding voltage to extend battery life. Lithium setups completely cut off once they’re fully charged.

Divide your total panel wattage by your battery bank voltage. For example, a 1,000W array on a 24V bank needs approximately 42A. Round up to a 50A or 60A unit. It’s always best to leave a little buffer for the cold-weather output spikes that send panels over their rated wattage.

Yes, and you actually are supposed to. A 60A controller won’t use its full capacity on a 30A system. It just gives you a little wiggle room if you decide to add more panels down the road.

That’s where the experts at Solar Store come in to help. We’ve been doing this for over 25 years now. Connect with our customer service team and we’ll point you toward the optimal solar charge controller for your application and budget.

Absolutely. These controllers can harvest as much as 30% more energy than PWM. They convert excess voltage into usable charging current. They pay for themselves over time through the efficiency gain!
