How Much Does an Off-Grid Solar System Cost? A Complete Price Breakdown

"So, you're thinking of going off-grid with solar? Fantastic! But then comes that elephant in the room, often voiced by a well-meaning technician: 'So, are you ready for the upfront cost?'

And let's be real, it's a huge question because there’s no one-size-fits-all price tag. What you'll actually spend can swing wildly based on how much power you gobble up, your spot on the map, the size of your setup, and the quality of the gear you choose.

Good news? Here at The Solar Store, we've helped thousands of people make the leap to off-grid living, so we’ve got a solid grip on the real numbers.

That's exactly why we put this guide together. We'll break it all down for you – from solar panels and batteries to inverters, wiring, the actual installation, and even ongoing maintenance.

By the time you're done reading, you'll have a much clearer picture and feel way more confident planning your off-grid adventure."

What Does an Off-Grid Solar System Consist of?

Buying an off-grid solar system means you plan to generate and store your own electricity without depending on the national power grid.

The entire package would contain:

  1. Solar panels collect energy from the sun

  2. The charge controller manages the energy going into the battery

  3. A battery bank stores electricity for use when there’s no sun (at night or on cloudy days)

  4. Inverter changes the stored power from DC to AC, so your appliances can use it

  5. Other components, such as cables, mounting racks, breakers, etc.

Depending on your chosen system, the off-grid solar systems in our inventory cost between $6,595 and $38,995.

There are a few factors that influence the price.

Factors That Determine The Cost of Off-Grid Solar System

It’s easier to break down the cost of an off-grid solar system when you stick with a particular power consumption need. So, for the sake of this article, we will use the one supplied by a customer as the basis of our calculations.

We understand that you may have a different need for power consumption or may even want an off-grid solar system for a large-scale project.

That said, here are the factors driving the cost of an off-grid solar system.

1. Your Energy Needs (Power Consumption)

This is the most important factor. You must first calculate what appliances you want to power (TV, fan, lights, fridge, freezer, pumping machine, etc.) and how many hours you use them daily.

The table below is a case study of a customer's power consumption needs. Let’s use it as an example:

Appliance

Wattage

Hours/Day

Energy (Wh/day)

LED Bulbs (5)

10W each

5 hrs

10 x 5 x 5 = 250 Wh

TV

100W

5 hrs

500 Wh

Fridge

150W

24 hrs

150 x 24 = 3600 Wh

Fan

60W

8 hrs

480 Wh

The total daily usage for this customer is 4,830 Wh or 4.83 kWh.

It means she needs a system to generate and store at least 4.83 kWh daily, ideally more (to cover rainy days or cloudy weather).

This, of course, influences the cost compared to other power needs.

2. Battery Size and Type

Batteries are often the most expensive part of an off-grid system.

You want enough storage to power your appliances at night and during low sunlight. From our experience, most people wish for 1–3 days of backup.

Battery capacity is measured in Amp-hours (Ah) or kilowatt-hours (kWh).

If you consume 4.83 kWh/day (still using the example) and want a two-day backup, you need about 4.83 x 2 = 9.66 kWh of battery storage.

We usually recommend Lithium-ion batteries, which are lighter and have a longer life. The cost for this power need starts at $1,000.

3. Solar Panel Size and Quality

You need enough off-grid solar panels to generate your daily energy usage. The size of the solar panel (and its quality) will influence the price of the overall off-grid system.

  • The general formula for getting the right solar sizing is: Total watts needed = Total daily usage ÷ Peak sun hours

Still working with the 4.83 kWh per day, 4,830 Wh ÷ 5 hrs = 966W (let’s say you add 25% for losses. So you need ~1,200W of panels.

It means you’ll need 4 to 6 solar panels of 250W to 300W each. Depending on the brand and model, this runs from $132 to $350 alone.

4. Inverter Size and Type

The inverter should handle the maximum power your appliances need at once.

If your fridge (150W), TV (100W), and fan (60W) run at the same time, that means 150 + 100 + 60 + lights = ~500–700W

With that in mind, you’d want to include a 1.5kVA to 2.5kVA inverter in the off-grid solar system. Depending on their capacity, off-grid inverters range from $359 to $6,609.

5. Charge Controller

Every off-grid solar system will come with a charge controller. It protects your batteries from overcharging.

This can also influence the overall cost. For example, MPPT controllers are more efficient than PWM. Also, the size of the controller depends on the solar panel setup

6. Installation and Accessories

If you’re not experienced in the technicalities of setting up a solar system, then it’s better to contract the installation.

So, in addition to getting the unit, additional costs can come from mounting structures, cables, breakers, fuses, labour, and so on.

All the factors influencing the price of an off-grid solar system hinge on your daily power needs.

That’s why the first and most important step is to list your appliances, their wattages, and usage hours before anything.

Again, the total cost of an off-grid solar system can range from $6,600 to $39,000.
