What is a grid-tie inverter?

It’s a unique type of inverter that syncs with your utility power. It’ll convert DC from your panels into grid-compatible AC just like any inverter. Then, it sends excess electricity back to your utility company. This can get you a credit with your utility company.

What is the difference between a grid-tied inverter and a regular inverter?

Regular inverters (AKA off-grid inverters) run independently of the grid, using battery banks instead. A grid-tied inverter syncs with the grid’s frequency and voltage. It also has anti-islanding protection to automatically shut down during outages so as to not backfeed into lines utility crews are working on.

Can a grid-tie inverter run on a battery?
