We purchased the Excel AC version of this unit and installed the AC/DC kit which allows the unit to be operated both on and off grid. I think in retrospect i would have been happy with just the NE version since we have never even used the AC side of the unit. While the recommendations in the manual suggest that the vent pipe should be several feet above the ridge line, we have installed it below and have had no issues with backdraft even with high 50 mph winds, this is probably helped by the fact that our vent pipe has no bends in it, even with the dc fan installed in the pipe ( and not connected to power) we have not had any issues.
