Aquatec SWP-6000 Submersible Solar Water Pump

Aquatec is known for making great water pumps. Their SWP series pumps are submersible deep well pumps that can operate on solar, wind, or batteries. The Aquatec SWP-6000 has a strong flow rate of 5-GPM at a depth of 120-feet and 3.3-GPM, all on a DC power source of 12-30-Volts DC. It’s a great pump to use with solar for moving a large amount of water. It measures about 5.75” and should be used with well casings of 6” or larger, or in open water.

The SWP-6000 is designed to deliver water to off-grid homes, farms, ranches, or various other water pumping applications. It’s a deep well positive displacement, diaphragm pump, made with potable safe materials. You can use the Aquatec SWP-6000 to pump water for people, pets, livestock, and other freshwater needs.

Using Solar Power for Aquatec SWP-6000 Deep Well Solar Pump

You can power the Aquatec directly off of DC power sources and renewable energy. This includes battery, solar, and wind. The SWP-6000 pump draws 5 amps (150 watts) at 30 VDC.

The operating voltage range is 12 volts minimum to 30 volts maximum. For optimal performance, a solar panel/array of 180 watts or greater is recommended. On a partly bright day, a higher wattage solar panel/array would best assist the pump's functioning. The solar panel(s) should be placed as close to the pump as possible, ideally, in an area that receives direct sunlight from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Calculating the Minimum Solar Array for Aquatec SWP-6000

You might not need the max performance of 180-watts of solar. In order to calculate the minimum solar array size required for your specific application, you’ll need to know your head height and reference our chart below. Head height is the distance you need to pump the water.

Once you know your head height you can view the chart below to see what the amp draw will be. You’ll then need to do a small calculation to determine the minimum wattage needed for your solar array.

Use the formula Voltage X Amps X 1.25 (25%) = Watts

For example, if your head height is 40 feet and you want to use a 24-volt solar panel. NOTE: solar panels have nominal voltage but the actual voltage is greater. For 24-volt panels use 30 volts, and for 12-volt panels use 18-volt in your calculations.

Our calculation would be 30 (volts) X 3.1(AMPS) X 1.25 = 116.2-Watts

Keep in mind that this is in clear, sunny skies. If you frequently see clouds or shade you’ll want to increase this, even double it sometimes. More wattage just means you’ll be able to pump during less than optimal sun. Just don’t go over 30-volts for your solar array.
